Betty White and Allen Ludden
Here’s our favourite nonagenarian senior citizen, Betty White, with the love of her life, Allen Ludden, in a video montage celebrating their time together.
Betty White married twice while she was in her twenties – the first time in 1945, to pilot Dick Barker, for less than 6 months before they divorced; her second marriage in 1945 to Hollywood agent Lane Allen ended in 1949. Baby boomers will remember Allen Ludden as a staple of television game shows in the 60’s and 70’s. It was not until 11 years later that Betty met Password game show host and recent widower Allen Ludden, in 1961. Allen proposed at least twice over the next two years before she accepted his third proposal and they finally married, in 1963.
Above, Betty White and Allen Ludden appeared together on an episode of The Love Boat in 1980. Allan Ludden died of cancer in 1981 and Betty White has never remarried.
Here’s a lesson for the rest of us from someone in her senior years that’s lived a (very) long life: In a March, 2015 interview with Oprah Winfrey, when asked what her biggest regret was, Betty White said:
“I spent a whole year, wasted a whole year that Allen and I could have had together, saying, ‘No, I wouldn’t marry him. No, I won’t. No, I won’t leave California. No, I won’t move to New York…I wasted a whole year we could have had together.”
