Top Ten New Year’s Eve Movies

As the 2016 countdown to New Year’s Eve gets closer to the magical midnight hour and 2017 is on the horizon, do you get nostalgic for great movies from the past? Here’s a look back at some New Year’s Eve theme movies – from murder mysteries to comedies – from 1936-1999.

10. Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977), a dark drama starring Diane Keaton, Tuesday Weld, Richard Kiley, Richard Gere, LeVar Burton, Brian Dennehy, and Tom Berenger. In Looking for Mr. Goodbar, a repressed teacher with body image issues (Diane Keaton) looks for some excitement in her life and turns to one-night stands. 8. An Affair to Remember (1957) starring Cary Grant, Deborah Kerr, and Richard Denning. Cary Grant as playboy Nicki Ferrante falls in love with teacher Terry McKay on a transatlantic cruise and kiss on New Year’s Eve; they are both entangled with other people, but make a pact to meet each other at the top of the Empire State Building in 6 months time. 7. Oceans 11 (1960), a Rat Pack New Year’s Eve Las Vegas casino crime caper. Oceans 11 starred Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop, Angie Dickinson, Normal Fell, Cesar Romero, Richard Conte, and featured a cameo by Shirley MacLaine. Ocean’s 11 was a box office smash, spawning a remake in 2001 and subsequent sequels. 6. Sunset Boulevard (1950), a Billy Wilder American film noir, starring William Holden as unsuccessful screenwriter Joe Gillis and Gloria Swanson as faded silent movie star Norma Desmond. Joe recalls his story in flashbacks; Norma invited him to a New Year’s Eve party where he was the only guest. Their relationship is fractured when he tries to let her down gently. Norma prepares for her “comeback” while Joe works on a screenplay. Sunset Boulevard was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, winning Best Writing, Story and Screenplay; Best Art Direction; and Best Music/Score. Actors William Holden, Gloria Swanson, and supporting actors Erich von Stroheim and Nancy Olson were all nominated for Academy Awards. 5. The Poseidon Adventure (1972) starring Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Red Buttons, Carol Lynley, Shelley Winters, Roddy McDowall, Stella Stevens, Jack Albertson, Pamela Sue Martin, Arthur O’Connell, and Leslie Nielsen. The Poseidon Adventure is a star-studded disaster movie flick set aboard an ocean liner capsized by a tidal wave on New Year’s Eve. 4. Trading Places (1983) starring Eddie Murphy, Dan Aykroyd, Denholm Elliott, Jamie Lee Curtis, with James Belushi and some SNL cast members. In Trading Places, commodities broker Louis Winthorpe III (Dan Aykroyd) is framed and has his life is turned upside down for a bet between the wealthy Duke brothers (Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche). Street beggar Billy Ray Valentine (Eddie Murphy) is plucked from obscurity in a “nature or nurture” experiment. Valentine and Winthorpe team up with prostitute Ophelia (Jamie Lee Curtis) to turn the tables on New Year’s Eve.

The Apartment won 5 Academy Awards including Best Picutre, Best Director, Best Writing (Original Screenplay), Best Film Editing, and Best Art Direction. Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine, and supporting actor Jack Kruschen were all nominated for Academy Awards for their performances in The Apartment. 

1. When Harry Met Sally (1989) starring Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan, Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby. In When Harry Met Sally, over a 12 year span friends Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) meet and talk about their relationship(s). Friendship turns to attraction at one New Year’s Eve party, and something more at another New Year’s Eve party. When Harry Met Sally screenwriter Nora Ephron was nominated for an Academy Award.
